Reading the last book in a good series is always a bit nostalgic and dismal at the same time. You know the series is going to end. You wonder whether your characters will get their happy ending. You know you are going to miss these characters. You also know you can’t delay reading it forever. I’ve come to realize that I almost always slow down when I’m reading the last book of a series I enjoyed.
At the end of ‘Gemina’, the refugees from Kerenza aboard the Hypatia vessel and the survivors from Heimdall station come together. They get intel that there are survivors left behind in Kerenza and so they decide to head towards it in the Mao ship. Meanwhile at Kerenza, Asha Grant bumps into her ex-boyfriend Rhys, who is now one of the pounders of BeiTech. BeiTech soldiers are waiting for enough hermium to be mined so they can activate the jump back home. Once they have the required hermium, they will wipe out the entire population of Kerenza. Will the Mao reach in time to the rescue of Kerenza?
Obsidio is another brilliant book by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. My favorite couple is still Hanna and Nik and I know that’s an unpopular opinion. It was amazing to see their relationship develop slowly in this book too. I was eagerly waiting for scenes involving them. One of my favorite part of this book was the banter between Nik and Ezra. They managed to crack me up on more than one occasion.
AIDAN! What do I say about AIDAN? Still Super Freaking Awesome!! A lot of reviewers have said that they think AIDAN is a ‘he’. But, I think it’s a ‘she’. I identified the most with her. She is the one that touched my heart in this series. Even though she had to take some tough decisions, a decision that I do not agree with, I still couldn’t bring myself to hate her! I don’t think I’ve ever read a book before where my favorite character was a non-living thing, more specifically an AI. It was a pleasure to read AIDAN’s thought process. How her ‘personality’ develops and she comes to conclusions based on the greater good. How she starts to develop ‘feelings’ for Kady. Her character struck a chord in me.
AIDAN, Oh my AIDAN. How did you manage to steal and break my heart?!
I know I still haven’t spoken about the new characters in this book. Rhys and Asha were refreshing to read about. But they didn’t have enough time for a proper character development. They didn’t even get this whole book. Half of the book was about Kady, Ezra, Hanna and Nik. Rhys and Asha gets only the other half. I would have loved to read more about their time together before the break up. They do not get much of a back story either. So I wasn’t really invested in them.
The only thing I regret now is not having read Illuminae as a physical book. I will never know whether that would have been my favorite book of the series and whether Kady and Ezra would have been my first pick out of the three couples. Sigh. Anyway, I’m glad I got to read Gemina and Obsidio as physical books.
I have only one thing to say before I end this review. Read the books for AIDAN.
YOU ARE GOING TO LOVE HER!!
My Rating: 4/5.
