My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing – Book Review

Synopsis

Our love story is simple. I met a gorgeous woman. We fell in love. We had kids. We moved to the suburbs. We told each other our biggest dreams, and our darkest secrets. And then we got bored.

We look like a normal couple. We’re your neighbours, the parents of your kid’s friend, the acquaintances you keep meaning to get dinner with.

We all have our secrets to keeping a marriage alive.

Ours just happens to be getting away with murder.

My Take

That blurb itself is so intriguing. I had been waiting to read a good thriller for quite some time. This was the perfect book to satisfy my urge.

The book is described as “Mr and Mrs Smith meets Dexter” and that is the perfect description. When you think about domestic thrillers, it’s almost always infidelity or the greed for power or money that comes to our mind. I mean most of the books or movies are based on that. But this one is quite different to all that. The book does start with the narrator, who is the husband, cheating on his wife. But as the story progresses, we find that there is much more to the book than that and we are pulled into it.

We are not privy to everything that goes on in Millicent’s (the wife), thoughts. So we don’t really know what she is planning. The husband is a character who loves his wife and family so much that he is more than ready to overlook all the little details that point to Millicent’s character. By the time he starts questioning her motives and actions, it is too late. I do not want to say more than this since it will spoil the suspense towards the end. I mean that was something I never saw coming.

My Rating

A definite 5⭐ read for me. If you love thrillers, this is a must read. Actually even if you don’t like thrillers, you should give this a go.
